It’s not hard to see why ‘Attack the Block’, apparently a simple British film of low-budget alien invasions hides one of the most revitalizing proposals of recent years within the genre. These are all the proper names of enormous talent behind it, and you can check it out right now at HBO Maxin Movistar Plus+ and in of the movie.
To get started, in the production is Edgar Wright, the great talent of the British fantastic of recent years, with films like ‘Zombies Party’, ‘Fatal Weapon’ or ‘Welcome to the end of the world’. His usual producer Nira Park is also in the production of ‘Attack the Block’. To follow, writes and directs Joe Cornish, friend of Wright, screenwriter of his frustrated ‘Ant Man’ and currently preparing the sequel to this ‘Attack the Block’ and an adaptation of Neal Stephenson’s cyberpunk classic ‘Snow Crash’.
Plus, the cast includes such inspiring performers as John Boyega (Finn in the latest ‘Star Wars’ trilogy), Jodie Whittaker (the last Doctor Who) and Nick Frost (another eternal Edgar Wright regular). All of them set up a fast-paced incident of anti-alien resistance, where basically A group of teenagers from a humble block of flats on the outskirts of London defend themselves against an alien invasion.
Without a doubt, among the most memorable aspects of the film is the design of its creatures: the aliens look like something out of an insane 80s comic, all Critters-style fluorescent loudmouths. But also, thanks to the rhythm that Cornish injects into it, the film goes back to films of people locked up with a lethal threat, but with a poisonous and critical subtext, thanks to the peculiar environment where the film takes place: a building in which its inhabitants have learned to fend for themselves.
