We bring you a small guide so that you know all the options for customize and configure Gmail notifications for Android, so that you can have control of your email notifications. Gmail is an application that you can use in different ways, with one or even several accounts, and for this reason it can be useful to know the options that are available to you for set up your notifications.
What we are going to do in this article is explain how to use each of the options and what they are for, and then you will have to decide which ones you want to use. And as we always say at Xataka Basics, if you think we have left out any important option, you can leave it to us, just like any trick you use, in the comments section.
Decide what you can do in the notification

For starters, when you’re shown a notification that you have a new email, the Gmail app allows you to perform an action from the notification itself in addition to responding. By default, this action is usually to archive the email to which the notification belongs, although you can change this to directly delete the email. To change it, open the Gmail menu and click on Settings.
Once inside the Gmail app settings, click on General adjustments to go to the settings that affect the app regardless of the account to which the mail arrives. here inside, click on the option Default notification actionwhich by default will be file. You will be able to change it for Removeso that when you receive the mail you can choose between replying and deleting it instead of replying and archiving it.
Evidently, it is you who must decide which action suits you best to appear in the new mail notification. If you usually receive a lot of spam, perhaps the most comfortable thing to do is to delete it so that it does not cost you too much to eliminate annoying emails. But you usually work with many important emails, perhaps archiving prevents you from accidentally deleting one.
Mute Gmail in the notification list

When notifications arrive on your Android mobile, regardless of the application, you are also offered some options to manage them and organize the priorities of which you want notification sounds to be sent to you or which ones you prefer switch to silent mode of Android notifications.
To do this, you have to open your Android’s notification panel when you get one from Gmail, and then hold your finger on the notification. When you do, you will see several options, being able to give higher priority to the notifications of that application or changing them to silent mode.
If you mute notifications in the notification panel, they won’t sound when they arrive, nor will they take priority at the top of the panel, but instead they will appear in a small lower part of the list next to the rest of the silenced notifications. They will arrive, they will still be in the notification panel, but they will not ring or take up space.
Even more customization

In the options to customize notifications directly from the notification center, there are still more things you can change. Keep your finger pressed on the Gmail notification, and when the menu appears to be able to silence them that we have told you before click on the gear icon to enter your settings.
You will enter a list of notification types, and in it you have to click on the option mail. This will take you to other types of settings where you can change things like the sound of the notification or if you want it to vibrate. You also have other options like if you want to see notification bubbles, or if you want to choose the content that is shown in the lock screen notification.
Manage all the notifications that the app sends you

Gmail is an application to which you can receive different types of messages or notifications, ranging from normal emails to calls from the Google Meet meeting system that is integrated into the application. And since you may not want all these messages or interactions to send you notifications, you will be able to disable different types of notifications so that you only receive those that you consider necessary.
To make this configuration you have to enter the settings of the Gmail application, and within the account selector click on the option of General adjustments. Within these settings, click on the option Manage notifications which should appear in second place, and you will enter a screen with the list of notification types that the application sends you.
By default you will have all types of notifications activated, so you simply have to deactivate those that do not interest you. The first option is the general one to deactivate all Gmail notifications, but below you will have the rest of the ones you have available one by one.
In the event that you have more than one account configured, the options to completely disable all notifications from each email account will appear first. But below you will see the rest of the general notification options that the notification sends you so that you can deactivate the ones you do not want.
Configure notifications for each account

In the previous step we have told you that in the notification configuration of the general settings you can completely deactivate those of each account that you have added. But if you click on this option instead of deactivating it o if you enter the option Manage notifications of the configuration of an email account selecting it on the settings screen instead of going to the General adjustmentsyou will go on to configure notifications for each account.
This is useful because you may want a type of notification reaches you in one account but not in another, and so you can have more control over notifications. For example, if you have a work email and a personal email configured in the application, so that they don’t get mixed up, you can deactivate several notifications that are annoying when they are personal emails, but are of interest to you for work.
What you will see when configuring the specific notifications of an email account is another list with the different types of notification that are available. And in this list, just like the general notifications, you will be able to disable the types of notifications that you are not interested in receivingleaving activated the ones you do want to be sent to you.
Only important email notifications

Gmail will allow you to manage the priority of the emails that arrive, marking them as important or outstanding. This will help give them more visibility, but it’s also very useful if you decide to set up Gmail to only send you notifications when high priority mail arrivesthe important ones, keeping silent with the rest of the emails.
To do this, you have to go into Gmail settings and tap on the account whose settings you want to manage. Here, click on the option Notificationswhich by default will be marked as all. Here, you can choose the option of high priority only so that Gmail only notifies you of the most important emails that reach that specific account.
Notification of each and every email

To take care of your mental health and the battery of your mobile, when you receive several emails in a row, it is possible that Gmail does not notify you of each one of them. However, in the event that you do not usually receive many and you do want to be notified of all of them, you will be able to do so. Of course, it will notify you only of those that arrive in the received folder, leaving out those in other folders such as spam.
To do this, you have to go into Gmail settings and tap on the account whose settings you want to manage. Here, click on the option Inbox Notificationsand when the options window opens you can select the option of Notify all messages which appears disabled by default.
Choose which labels show notification

Gmail has several ways in which you can organize the emails that come to you to maintain a certain personalized order. The best of them is creating mailing labels, and then having certain senders send you emails with certain labels. Well, you will also be able to choose which labels send you notificationsand can also silence those of specific labels.
To do this, enter the Gmail settings and click on the account whose settings you want to manage. Here, click on the option Manage tags. You will enter a screen with a list of tags, and in each of them you can activate notifications or disable them according to your needs.
Here, think of all the flexibility it can give you play with labels and their notifications to mark different emails in a muted and do not disturb label, or marking some as exceptions to some other rule in a label that does show notifications.
As with all emails, when you set up notifications for a label You can also mark that I send them all to you, of each and every one of the emails of that label. This can be useful when setting a label as the highest priority where all emails that come to you from it matter a lot.
Decide on chat notifications

I remind you that Gmail has an integrated chat, which allows you to use Google Meet from its application. This integrated chat also sends you notifications via Gmail, which in some contexts may be a bit annoying. If this is the case, you will always be able to deactivate them.
What you have to do for that is to enter the Gmail settings. Once inside, click on the email address whose chat notifications you want to disable. In here now just turn off the option chat notifications so that they are not sent to you.
On this same screen you also have the option of Postpone Chat notificationswhich instead of completely disabling them will simply allow you to choose to be silent for a certain period of time.
Set the notification sound

And finally, you should know that you can also customize the sound of notifications for each email account that you have configured in Gmail. Thus, you will be able to differentiate the emails of a more important account to be able to pay a little more attention to them as well.
To do this, you have to go into the Gmail settings. Once inside, click on the email address whose chat notifications you want to deactivate and inside click on the option notification sounds. Here, click on the notification sound, and you will be taken to the sound selector that your Android mobile has.
