The idea of an anime version of ‘Rick and Morty’ isn’t entirely new: Adult Swim has already produced two excellent shorts of the characters with this aesthetic and promotional intentions. (plus a previous one, ‘Samurai & Shogun‘, which maintained the original style of the series, but paid homage to the classic hyperviolent Japanese cinema). They titled ‘Rick and Morty vs. Genocider‘ y ‘Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)‘ and generated over ten million combined views.
The person in charge of these last two shorts, and also of the future series of ten episodes that Adult Swim has commissioned from him, is Takashi Sano. Sano is the director of the ‘Tower of God’ or ‘Sengoku Basara: End of Judgment’ series. Although he will draw from characters and situations that we have already met in the main series, Sano will be free to explore the enormous possibilities of the franchise as he pleases.
According to Sano, “Rick and his gang’s exploits in the multiverse pose challenges to the family bond, but they always manage to rise to the occasion.” The director has found positive aspects in the message of the series: “They have a life-affirming vision, and where Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have had the opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures.”
Sano’s two shorts were full of cute homages to anime classics, like ‘Dragon Ball’ or ‘Akira’. Hopefully some of that will be repeated in this spin-off, seasoned with the series’ crazy multi-reference pace. In any case, and given the aesthetics and the very strange sense of humor that the shorts show off, it is very possible that it is worth approaching this project that, for the moment, does not have a specific release date.
