If you are a digital old man, you may remember those times when we used CDs or DVDs to store our information. Unless we had a rewritable storage medium, these discs could be record only once (although we also had the possibility to do a “multi-session” to add data later). Verbatim brings that possibility back to the table, but with an SSD.
But aren’t SSDs designed so that data can be overwritten? Yes, but the new solid state drives SWOVA128G from the American manufacturer can only be written once, just like the old media. The manufacturer, which calls its solution “long life”, promises a 10-year guaranteed lifespan, so the data should remain unchanged for that time or more.
An SSD with the spirit of a CD
The concept of writing data only once can be somewhat unusual in these times. However, Verbatim envisions various usage scenarios for its single-use units. Among them he mentions the storage of accounting data, confidential data and project deliverables. As we can see, this type of solution is mainly aimed at business users, but it is interesting.

At the level of features and specifications, we find the possibility of store (one time) up to 128 GB and a USB-C connection. Writing the drive requires Windows 11 or Windows 1 (S and ARM versions are excluded) with specific software. At the time of writing we do not need any additional program and we can do it from Windows 11, 10, 8.1, macOS, Chrome OS, iPad OS and Android.
It should be noted that due to its single-use nature, the Verbatim software will notify us if the storage drive is nearing capacity. A curious fact is that since the data cannot be erased, if we want to get rid of that information, the only alternative, according to the manufacturer, is to physically destroy the SSD.
